How to Create Categories and Subcategories in WordPress

Hi! Welcome to BuildMySiteForFree.com. Today, I’m going to be showing you how to create categories and subcategories. Now, the first thing that you’re going to do is when you’re on the dashboard, you’re going to come over to the navigation menu and open up the posts submenu. You’re then going scroll down to where it says categories and click that link.

It’s going to bring you to the add new category page. Here on the left side we have text boxes to fill in for our new category. Here on the right side we have categories that we have already created with options to edit them and delete them.

The first thing you’re going to do is create a title for your category. I went ahead and named mine “Do It Yourself” because under this category, I’m going to have a lot of posts on do it yourself activities. Then you have “Slug”. Slug is just a URL friendly version of the name. It’s usually only lowercase letters and can contain numbers and hyphens. You can leave this blank because it will do it for you. If you look over here on my restaurant critiques category, if you look at the slug, it already did it. It’s “restaurant-critiques”, so you can leave that blank. Then you have parent, if you are keeping this as a main category, you’re going to leave this as none. When I show you how to create a subcategory, I’ll show you how we change that. Then, you have an option to write a description. This is optional. You don’t need to add it. For now, I’m just going to leave it blank. Then you click add new category. As you can see, it adds it to your menu right over here.

What I want to do next is create a subcategory. So, I went ahead and already filled in the blanks. I want to do a subcategory of do it yourself home activities, but strictly for home décor. That’s what I made as my title. I left slug blank, but for parent what you want to do is instead of keeping it none, you’re going to scroll it down to the category that you want. I want my do it yourself category. That’s my parent option. Then, for a description I figured I would just add a little something here. What I wrote was “Here you will find posts on DIY Activities for decorating your home.” It is just a nice touch to add for a subcategory. Of course, I’m going to click add new category, and it’s going to appear right under “Do It Yourself” , but as a subcategory. You’ll notice all subcategories will have hyphens and be under your main category.

Now, a few things that I do want to point out. #1, don’t ever worry if you do delete a category, it will not delete the posts in that category. So, don’t think that you are losing any of your posts. The second thing that I want to mention is that if you ever want to edit or delete a category, if you click the edit button under the specific category, it will bring you to a page that looks much like this. You can edit the information. Or you can click quick edit and change the name and slug and update that category. It will do it quick and easy for you right there.

The last thing I want to mention is that if you have a very long list of categories and you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can type in the name right here in search box. Click search categories, and it will find it for you.

Okay? So, this is the end of our video for creating categories and subcategories, and please stay tuned to future videos. Thank you.
